Praslin, Seychelles – June 17 – 19
From Madagascar our private jet brings us effortlessly up to the islands of the Seychelles just south of the equator. We enjoy lunch & fine wines on board our luxury jet.
We land at Mahe, the main island international airport, where we make use of the VIP Lounge and then easily transfer to our private charter “island hopper” Air Seychelles plane over to nearby Praslin Island. A half hour scenic drive brings us to our sumptuous beachside / hillside resort Raffles Seychelles. Our luggage awaits us. Our panoramic suites are beyond belief with 260degree views across the waters and nearby islands. Why ever leave this place?
From our base on Praslin, our days in Seychelles are close to “shangri la” living. This is tropical Indian Ocean islands paradise. We are able to enjoy fine dining restaurants, gorgeous accommodations, the resort’s excellent amenities and beach, some snorkeling and sea swims, and the lagoon-size pool.
Some of us take a quick safari to the nearby Valley de Mai Nature Reserve, the smallest UNESCO World Heritage Site in the world. It’s a palm forest … home to 6 of the palms indigenous only to Seychelles and a couple of these only found on Praslin. The extraordinary coco-de-mer is the ‘prize palm’ of this place and produces the largest seed / nut in the world. There’s plenty else to see in this unusual forest of towering protected palms.
We take a day’s boat excursion aboard “Elle” … visiting nearby island Curieuse for the Giant Land Tortoise visit, then on down to the small and beautiful island of La Digue. Both Curieuse and La Digue named for 2 French expeditionary schooner here in the islands in the late 1700s. We visit a copra (coconut oil) factory of yesteryear, enjoy a drive through vanilla plantations, and visit Anse des Argents, one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Lunch is at a lovely oceanside hotel. Our continued exploration was a visit to Cousine Island, a haven for birds unique to Seychelles. This is a day of protected areas. It’s a jet-set day amid the islands.
We’ve had a glimpse of this beautiful exotic place, the Seychelles. It’s time to be on our way to real safari … from a panoramic suite to a palatial tent …
