The Republic of Uzbekistan is a double landlocked country in Central Asia whose earliest recorded settlers arrived from Eastern Iran around 800 BC, although there is evidence of human activity as far back as the Paleolithic Era. Conquered by the Muslims in the 7th-century, the region’s inhabitants became followers of Islam. With their strategic location on the Silk Road between China and the Mediterranean Sea, the cities of Samarkand, Khiva, and Bukhara grew prosperous, and witnessed the emergence of leading figures of the Islamic Golden Age, a period of cultural, economic, and scientific growth. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991, the country declared independence as the Republic of Uzbekistan and kept Tashkent as its capital.
