Located in the Indian Ocean southwest of Sri Lanka and India, the Republic of Maldives is an archipelagic state consisting of 1,196 tropical islands spread out over 540 miles from north to south and formed by 26 natural atolls. The capital is Male, located on the North Male Atoll traditionally called the “King’s Island” where the ancient royal dynasties ruled.

The remote islands are either inhabited by natives, by hotel resorts, or are uninhabited. Most resorts occupy an entire island and therefore create an unusually exclusive holiday experience.
