Hong Kong, a former British colony, is today a semi-autonomous Chinese territory. It is a vibrant, densely populated urban port city with a skyscraper-studded skyline. Though small, it is diverse – with an ultra-modern financial district, and old-world traditional neighborhoods, a beach area, and even a Disneyland. There are three main sections – Hong Kong Island, the more urban Kowloon (mainland) side and Lantau Island –each connected through a metro system, and ferries. Hong Kong is still one of the best shopping cities in the world and is a great place to take a ‘foodie tour’, get a foot massage or have a new tailor made suit made just for you!

Hong Kong can be fun for everyone – for those who love culture, Asian history, urban scenery or great restaurants. Hong Kong can be a destination itself, but most often it is best as an add-on to another Asian journey.

• Hong Kong (Kowloon side)

Walk through the Flower Market, Yuen Po Street Bird Garden, a traditional-style garden with stalls selling exotic songbirds & handcrafted birdcages; view the Wong Tai Sin Temple or Chi Lin Nunnery, a complex of Buddhist temples. Take the short ferry across to Hong Kong Island, or perhaps a harbor cruise. In the evening watch the nightly free sound and light show.

Explore the UNESCO historic center, from when Macau was a Portuguese colony, and then test your luck at one of the glitzy international casinos. You can get to Macau (on the Chinese mainland) from Hong Kong by ferry, helicopter, or now on the new 34-mile bridge (the longest sea bridge in the world).
