Wildlife plays a big role in any visit to Borneo; many of the colorful animals inhabiting the island are indigenous only in Borneo. It’s one of the few places where you can see orangutans, pygmy elephants, and hornbills in the wild. Borneo’s sheer valleys shelter tribal people, with a way of life that has altered little over thousands of years.

Bako National Park is a coastal reserve, only accessible by boat, where pitcher plants that open and close and wild orchids grow freely. Bako has been protected for over half a century, so the wildlife is less fearful of humans. Keep an eye out for bearded pigs, macaques, or the famous proboscis monkeys inhabiting the island.

At Sepilok Sanctuary, you can see orangutans up close in the wild. Or take a riverboat trip up the Kinabatagan River hoping to catch a glimpse of pygmy elephants scattered along the banks.

Lakani can design a fascinating journey for you through the island of Borneo, showing you the best of its mosaic indigenous tribes, rich history, ancient rainforests, and diverse wildlife.

Lakani World Tours can create a travel itinerary best suited for you – depending on your time, interests, and budget.
