Reunion Island – March 16 – 18
As we said goodbye to Asia we boarded the Lakani Jet excited to continue jet cruising our way to Reunion. Just over 100 miles east of Madagascar, Reunion is a small French island with limited commercial flight options and consequently much easier to reach by luxury of our own private jet. After touching down we were escorted to our home in the heart of Reunion’s authentic and preserved natural environment.
We woke up to weather conditions that those of us interested in a helicopter tour would not be able to do so because of a cyclone off toward Madagascar. Our morning instead found us all touring with our knowledgeable guide to see the sights, including the historic bridge of Pont Suspendu, the lava rock surrounded Notre Dame Des Laves Church, and the dramatic cliffside coast.
To the delight of those interested in the helicopter flight, a “weather window” opened up and the intrepid flyers took to the skies in a helicopter flight over the lush valleys and volcano flows of the island. This was the perfect way to return to our hotel from our delicious lunch at the Diana Dea Lodge. Those happier on the ground continued sightseeing before returning to the hotel.
The next day we took to the sea for a new vantage point of the island. Our private catamaran, fully equipped with champagne and tapas, gave us a home in the harbor, safe from the winds of the distant cyclone out in the open ocean.
We enjoyed lunch at an authentic creole restaurant, a meal made even more special with a private jazz performance by Luc Joly and other famous local artists. We finished the day with fine coffee, macaroons, and excitement for tomorrow’s journey to Kruger National Park. Africa here we come!
