DAYS 1 – 3   •  Parc National Des Volcans, RWANDA ---Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge

On arrival at Kigali airport, you will be met and taken on a scenic 3 hour drive to Parc National des Volcans.  The journey north goes through beautiful terraced hillsides that characterize much of Rwanda’s landscape, gradually climbing to the base of the awesome Virunga Volcanoes, sometimes with as many as five peaks visible.  You will be driven to the magnificent Governors’ Camp Sabyinyo Silverback Lodge, perfectly situated in the foothills of the mighty Virunga Volcanoes.

Tracking the gorillas on the slopes of the Virungas is a magical experience.  When you reach the gorillas you are allowed to spend an hour with them, and often yu will be back in time for a late lunch.  Some gorilla families however, are more elusive and tracking can take  full day, especially when it is the rainy season.  However, falling under the gaze of a great silverback makes any trek seem worth it.  Return to the lodge and rest or if arriving back early at the lodge, there are opportunities for bird watching, mountain biking or guided walks around the lodge.

Another primate adventure awaits you in the Virunga heartland.  Trekking the golden monkey, a subspecies of blue monkey, found only in the bamboo forests of the volcanic mountain chain that forms a part of the boundary between Rwanda and Uganda.  Hiking through dense strands of bamboo interspersed with open glades, your guide will lead you to the habitat of groups of “habituated” golden monkeys who have become accustomed to human presence.

Time permitting, you can visit local community socio-economic and conservation projects run by SACOLA, the community trust that owns the lodge, and by African Wildlife Foundation and its local partner, the International Gorilla Conservation Program and learn about the exceptional work being done by these organizations.  Explore the bustling town of Ruhengeri with its vibrant colorful markets and observe their local handicrafts such as basketwork and pottery.  Meals: B
