A Gastronomic Adventure for the Food and Wine Connoisseur
Arrive in Paris and take the elevator to the Michelin starred Jules Verne Restaurant halfway up the Eiffel Tower where stunning views and exquisite cuisine await. Travel by TGV to Strasbourg, capital of Alsace. With more Michelin starred restaurants than any other region in France outside of Paris, Alsace is the country’s leading area for good food and wine. Explore the historic center of Strasbourg on foot and continue by boat to see how it has been developed into the capital of Europe. Sample traditional Alsacian cuisine at the Maison Kammerzell set conveniently next to one of the most impressive cathedrals in Europe. Discover the Route des Vins as it meanders through charming flowered villages with medieval churches, castles and vineyards as far as your eyes can see. Visit the tasting rooms of wineries and find your favorite Riesling, Gewürztraminer, Pinot Gris or Pinot Noir. Sample regional dishes, like Tarte Flambée and Choucroute and dine on gourmet cuisine at fine restaurants along the way, including one of Alsace’s famous three star Michelin restaurants, Auberge de l’Ill, on the river bank in the pretty village of Illheusen. Walk through the vineyards, hike up to the local chateaux, shop for souvenirs or stroll through museums. There are a myriad of ways to help work off those extra calories.
Next head southwest to the Burgundy region of France and follow its wine road, known as the Route des Grand Crus. Stay in Beaune, whose heritage in wine making dates back to the Middle Ages. Visit its impressive wine museum and its most famous sight, the 15th-century Hospice, Hotel Dieu Wander through the cobblestone streets where you find historical mansions, medieval and half-timbered houses, and flowered gardens. Catch a splendid view from the air as you soar over the vineyards in a hot air balloon. Sample the many excellent wines and indulge in Burgundy cuisine.
End your journey with a gastronomical extravaganza, dining first in Lyon perhaps at Paul Bocuse and then in Paris where you are spoiled for choice with an expansive selection of fine restaurants.
