Cultural Connections – Around the World by Luxury Private Jet – Biarritz, FRANCE and San Sebastian, SPAIN

OCTOBER 26 -30, 2010  BIARRITZ, FRANCE and SAN SEBASTIAN, SPAIN

We arrived into Biarritz in the early evening…a beautiful balmy October evening.  As with so many of our arrivals, we stepped off our jet and swiftly into our waiting coaches for the short  transfer through this historic beach town (at the “end” of the Pyrenees Mountains) on the Atlantic.  Our arrival at majestic Hotel du Palais was impressive with this stunning palace hotel fully lit at night.  This hotel was built as the seaside beach palace of Empress Eugenie, wife of Napoleon III, built during the mid-1800s.  It is an impressive place right on the beach overlooking a beautiful bay…today a surfer’s paradise.

Our initial day included a leisurely morning for our guests to enjoy the sumptuous dining room, La Rotunde, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.  We have glorious weather here.  Cool and chilly – which most enjoy after the Fall heat of India and Abu Dhabi –and with bright sunny days.  We started our day with a crisp, brisk walk along the promenade from the hotel, following the beach and through the old town.  We visited highlights of ‘old’ Biarritz…the old fishing harbour, the madonna on the rock, the maritime memorial, the seafront church, and the historically registered lighthouse.  (Among the ‘new’ highlights of Biarritz our guests later discovered fabulous stores such as Hermes and Gucci).  We glimpsed the house-factory of Coco Chanel.  We headed north along the coast road through residential Anglet set along 3 miles of sandy beaches.  We arrived at the medieval river port town of Bayonne – steeped in history and owned through time by the French, the English, and the Spanish.  Bayonne is at the confluence of two large rivers coming down from the Pyrenees Mountains.

After a brief tour of the town we were serenaded by a Basque Mens Choir at their private club.  This was a highlight…exceptional award-winning singers singing enthusiastically for us while we enjoyed sampling delicious parma hams and local rose wines.  From here we walked around the corner to a small, exclusive Michelin star restaurant (L’Auberge Cheval Blanc).  Our lunch was absolutely delicious and memorable…including local hake (fish) and beef dishes.  After such a feast many members elected to return back to our ‘palace’ for the remainder of the afternoon at leisure.  A few of us elected to ‘walk off’ our gastronomique excesses with a walking tour through historic Bayonne…it was a gorgeous sunny afternoon…featuring the river walk, the restored cathedral, the Hotel de Ville (town hall), and the renowned chocolate stores.

In the early evening, with Heidi Lakani, we hosted a champagne sunset reception on the terrace of the hotel.  It was picture perfect…and a superb gathering event was enjoyed by all.  We raised our Laurent Perrier bubbly glasses to the sun dipping down into the remarkably calm Atlantic.  We were happy…but the surfers not so.  Dinner was as usual ‘dine by choice’ with many of our guests enjoying the exceptional a la carte dining room of this palace hotel, and some others exploring excellent restaurants of this town and region.

Our second day of touring involved getting ‘out & about’ further afield…specifically across to the “other side” meaning from France into Spain.  Thanks to the EC there is no longer any border crossing…and here in Basque country, the Basque know no borders.  In our small groups, we left from the hotel in three separate intimate groups.  This day we headed south along the coast…initially in France…to the tiny seaside hamlet of St. Jean du Luc that suddenly gained great fame and notoriety when King Louis IV of France was securing his treaty alignment with the King of Spain, in marrying his daughter the “Infanta”, Maria Theresa.

This was a political marriage of its time and not one that Louis IV cherished.  The Spanish royal family kept King Louis waiting a month at this little seaside St. Jean du Luc.  The townspeople of St. Jean were overwhelmed in trying to keep the king busy and entertained for such a time.  We visited the church where these royals were married and we saw their manor homes…two separate mansion homes specifically built for their brief stay in this seaside hamlet.  We walked the town to its picturesque bay…and we also made time for a quick visit to the old ‘Maison Adam’ renowned for decades as makers of the very best macaroons in the country.  We continued in the sunshine along the beautiful coast through medieval towns, one of which was the film set of “Papillion”, and into seaside San Sebastian in Spain.

After a brief hilltop stop for photographs of the magnificent ‘La Concha’ beach bay – around which the town of San Sebastian has grown up – we headed into the ‘old town’ for a walking lunch tour along narrow cobbled streets.  Along our way we stopped in at several authentic tapas bars to enjoy tastes of Spain.  This was a unique way to dine…in our small groups we each visited at least three different tapas restaurants, staying for upto 20-30 minutes at each,  and sampling delicious tapas traditions and local Spanish wines (white, rose, & red).  This was a whole new variation on ‘dine around’ and much enjoyed by all of our members.  There was plenty of ‘siesta’ on tour coach journeys back to Biarritz.  Arriving back in the mid-afternoon many of our guests elected to wander around through Biarritz and enjoy all the ‘modern marvels’ of excellent shopping…as well as some beachside surf competition viewing.  The day departed with another dramatic orange ball sunset into the Atlantic.

Today’s Choose Your Day gave our guests the opportunity to follow their passion.  Some clients journeyed to France’s interior countryside along the Nive River Valley to St. Jean Pied de Port, where they were welcomed at Domain Abotia by the owner, Peio Errecart, for a tasting of the local wine and cheese with wine expert Antoine Vignac.    Our culinary clients enjoyed a cooking class with Chef Alain Briant…quite renowned in these parts.  They shopped for fresh produce and meats in the local market and later enjoyed the fruits of their “labor” at lunchtime.   A few of our adventurous clients took a 4wheel-drive safari into the Pyrenees Mountains, where they visited local villages and enjoyed lunch at a charming Basque Inn.   Our art aficionados journeyed to Bilbao, Spain and not only enjoyed a privately escorted tour with a specialty Guggenheim Museum guide…but also a fantastic lunch at their excellent river view restaurant.  The Guggenheim is truly a modern ‘wonder of the world’ and Frank Gehry’s design is almost immortal in its concept.

This evening we all reconvened in the gorgeous ballroom of the Hotel du Palais at an elegant farewell reception and dinner party.  What a grand finale to our Private Jet Around the World journey…  with delectable cuisine and a fantastic band that kept us dancing well into the evening.    Tomorrow we depart on the final leg of our tour to Boston, MA.   We’ve made many new friends and look forward to traveling together again soon on our next Lakani Private Jet tour.

Cultural Connections – Around the World by Luxury Private Jet – Abu Dhabi & Dubai, UAE and Alexandria, EGYPT

OCTOBER 23 – 26 ABU DHABI & DUBAI, UAE and ALEXANDRIA, EGYPT

We dined in style during the four hour flight from Agra to Abu Dhabi, arriving in the early evening.  We settled into our ‘palace’ property with ease and much comfort.  It is indeed a marvel of the world in terms of hotel.  None of us have stayed in quite such sumptuous and ‘OTT’ (‘over the top’) accommodations.  One of our clients commented that he always thought Burj Al Arab in Dubai to be the most significant hotel stay of his life…now this was topped by our Emirates Palace.  Such a happy arrival.

Abu Dhabi is the largest and wealthiest of seven United Arab Emirates, including Dubai.  Once a small Bedouin fishing village on the Gulf of Arabia, thanks to the discovery of massive oil reserves it is today a modern city of shimmering skyscrapers, extraordinary architecture, extravagant villas and modern palaces. The ‘Corniche’ highway along the seafront makes for an excellent viewing of this modern marvel new city.

Our time in Abu Dhabi included a visit to the Sheik Zayed Mosque…among the largest mosques in the world today and certainly the newest ‘wonder’ of the Islam world.  This mosque is built entirely of pristine white marble (with cooled floors), inlay of semi-precious stones, the largest Persian carpet in the world (all woven from New Zealand wool), as well as the most magnificent Swarovski crystal chandeliers of which the central one is the largest crystal chandelier in the world.   This Mosque – a gift from Sheik Zayed (the former king) to the world – is a testament of global cultural connection in terms of religion and understanding.  Our group was entirely “wow’d” with our time spent at the mosque.  Many of us left with new understandings in regard to the religion of Islam.

That evening we enjoyed an exclusive modern yacht cruise on the Arabian Gulf with gorgeous  sunset views across the dramatic golden glistening sky-scrapers city skyline of Abu Dhabi – all the while enjoying a cocktail reception with selections of local canapés.

Other visits during our days in Abu Dhabi included a full day tour over to the neighboring Emirate State of Dubai – world renowned as the tourism center of the Emirates.  This day included a boat cruise along the Dubai River with views of the city, as well as a special ‘private access’ luncheon at the greatest man-made ‘sail’ in the world, the Burj Al Arab Hotel.  As usual for our group,  any sightseeing day would not be complete without a shopping opportunity, hence the mandatory shopping visit to Dubai’s Gold Souk’.

For several of our guests who had already visited Dubai, we had an intensely interesting half-day visit to the Abu Dhabi Falcon Hospital.  Falconry to the Emirates is akin to polo to the English.  But, interestingly, falconry has existed in the Bedouin culture for centuries…using these magnificent fast birds of prey to hunt food for the desert living people…hunting small gazelles, rabbits, and other fowl.  To a Bedouin, their falcons were as important as a son or daughter.  Today, falconry (like polo) is more of an elitist hobby.  At the falconry center a few of us were fortunate enough to experience ‘close & personal’ interaction with these beautiful birds.

Our grand finale was a late afternoon desert safari in 4-wheel drive safari vehicles – with tires slightly deflated to allow them to traverse over towering sand dunes (without getting stuck!), arriving just before sunset at a carpeted sunset champagne cocktails reception with falconry flight display. In hunting these birds can exceed speeds of 150mph – almost miraculous.  Just a short drive over the sand dunes we came upon our Bedouin tented camp…for gala desert dinner under the stars.  We were entertained by an excellent Arabic music trio, as well as a surprise birthday belly dancer performance for one of our guests.  All in all this was one of the most memorable nights to remember along our unique journey.

Our departure from Abu Dhabi was, as our arrival, through the ‘Royal Flight’ private terminal – a huge “PLUS” with the majority of our flight entries and exits being a private jet flight and entirely non-commercial.  In no time we were winging our way westward with our beautiful Icelandic ‘sky goddesses’ taking exemplary care of our every needs.

Today, our private jet proved (yet again!) its exceptional prowess.  As we head from the Arabian peninsula toward beautiful Biarritz (in France), we are able to “pop in” to Alexandria in northern Egypt on the Mediterranean Sea…a city of exceptional global cultural importance.  From the time of the ancient Egyptians, through Ptolemy, Alexander the Great, Caesar, and Cleopatra this seaside port has been of veritable importance, crisscrossing in culture from African to Greek to Roman to European…an axis of our ancient and modern world.  Over the centuries establishing several hundred years of the largest most learned library of knowledge.  And we were able to ‘touch down’ to experience this marvel, albeit a quick visit but a most notable one.

And we jet onward to Biarritz…to the magnificent Hotel du Palais built by Emperor Napoleon’s wife, Eugenie, as a grand holiday retreat at the beach for she and her friends.  A wonder of the world in its own historic right.  There’s a card game underway in our ‘sky lounge’…and we’re about to enjoy a most delicious early evening dinner of seafood specialties, veal medallions, and a ‘delic’ dessert of Arabian delight.  Farewell Arabia, Welcome France!!

Cultural Connections – Around the World by Luxury Private Jet – INDIA

OCTOBER 20 – 22    UDAIPUR & AGRA, INDIA

And so on to India we fly…rejoining our well-appointed private jet.   As always with our take-offs & landings on these trips, a member of our client group is invited to sit on the flight deck of our 757 Boeing jet for the “experience of a lifetime”…being up front with Captain and his crew for the most exciting moments of flying (ie. taking off and landing).

On board our private jet,  our crew welcome us aboard in traditional dress with welcoming first-class service.  An excellent fresh seafood luncheon service was enjoyed on our short three hour flight to India.  Several clients enjoyed the ‘sky lounge’ dining service.

In India the sun is shining brightly.  We were soon at our ‘palatial digs’ for the next three nights…the spectacular Udaivilas Hotel, overlooking the lake across to the main royal palace (which we will be touring privately).  In the late afternoon we headed out on to the lake for a most enjoyable sunset cruise, including a brief champagne reception on a smaller palace island in the middle of the lake.  India is a land of great wonders…an intense sensory ‘overload’.  We are here to relish it all.

Our first day of touring started from the sumptuous Udaivilas – where some group members were lucky enough to meet Dame Judy Dench (filming a movie in India, staying at our hotel).  We headed out on a beautiful clear morning around Lake Pichola to the grand palace of Maharani of Mewar, Udaipur being the capital city of Mewar region.  This massive, opulent palace is almost ¾ of mile in length and has over 400 rooms.  It also contains one of the most spectacular Swarovski crystal collections in the world, as well as an exceptional art collection (several pieces of which are constantly on loan to renowned international art museums). A tour of this impressive palace can only be described as awesome.   We also visited the nearby Princess Gardens with their magnificent playful fountains  built during the 1700s and entirely operated by gravity, no electricity.  In the afternoon most of us viewed some exquisite jewelry collections (hand made with precious gems), as well as textiles and antiques.

In the evening we were transferred to the royal ‘hunting grounds’ arena of the palace for a gala evening reception event under the stars.  Our flight crew joined us for this evening.  To the surprise of all our group this was also the Hindu wedding ceremony of our tour members, Mr. & Mrs. Richard Lewis, recently married in Connecticut and now – to the benefit of us all – enjoying an extravaganza Indian marriage event (ie. Bollywood style).  The bride and groom were outfitted in full royal regalia, the groom riding on a Mahwari stallion in full dress.  Following the spiritual aspects of this wedding, we were treated to lavish Indian entertainment along with a fantastic feast dinner.  The local paparazzi was with us too.  The Lewis’ became local celebrities in both newspapers and local TV.  Somewhat thankfully, the usual 9+ hours wedding event was encapsulated into about 4 hours.  A unique and exhilarating evening was enjoyed by all.

Other highlights of Udaipur included visiting the monumental Jain temples, built & carved of white marble in the 15th century; a relaxed luncheon at Lake Palace (famed for its feature in  the James Bond film “Octopussy”) on the ‘hanging’ marble balcony overlooking Lake Pichola, and an evening champagne reception at beautiful Durbar Hall (inside the royal palace) adorned with oil paintings of the Kings of Mewar and featuring massive crystal chandeliers weighing over 4000lbs..  What a finale!

However, our splendid “finale” to India was an aspect of private jet travel that is hard to beat.  Following a leisurely breakfast at Udaivilas, we boarded our jet for a quick “hop” flight to Agra.  By late morning we were all a-gog in admiration at the beautiful entrance of Taj Mahal…the ultimate testament of love built by great Mughal Emperor, Shah Jehan, for his beloved wife (last of several!) Mumtaz.  Truly a wonder of our world…and here we were, by private jet, able to enjoy this monumental testimony for a few hours.  Others in our group – those who had visited the Taj Mahal on other adventures to India – spent their hours in Agra visiting Mother Theresa’s Orphanage as well as the impressive Red Fort.

Leaving Agra in the late afternoon, we allowed some of our comedic tour members to perform the “flight safety” demonstration on board our private jet.  It was surprising how much information they retained…could we possibly have some future ‘around the world’ flight attendants for our next trips???  And so we jet on to the United Arab Emirates and it’s capital city, Abu Dhabi.  Here we will stay on the Arabian Gulf at the beachside Emirates Palace Hotel…undoubtedly to be our own “testament of travel love” for the next few days.

Cultural Connections – Around the World by Luxury Private Jet – LAOS and MYANMAR (Burma)

OCTOBER 17 – 19  VIENTIANE, LAOS & YANGON – BAGAN, MYANMAR

Our crew welcomed us on board in traditional Vietnamese dress, just as they did when leaving Japan.

Leaving Hanoi and en route to Yangon, Myanmar (formerly Burma) is where a private jet can excel.  We were able to ‘pop in’ to Vientiane, capital of Laos.

We spent a few hours enjoying some of the temple sites and monuments of Vientiane, a rather charming small city along the banks of the mighty Mekong River.

Lunch in VientianeFollowing our tour, we enjoyed a most delicious Lao luncheon (an extensive tapas-style selection of their best and tastiest foods at a superb restaurant with local entertainment).  We were efficiently aboard our jet and airborne for Yangon…arriving in the late afternoon.  On our transfer from the airport to our luxury boutique hotel, Governor’s Residence (a property of Orient Express Hotels), we were able to get a first glimpse of the largest pagoda temple of this area – renowned Shwedagon Pagoda .  This is a towering golden pagoda of unbelievable size, notably a UNESCO World Heritage site.

The following morning, in small guided groups, we all spent time marvelling amid this temple-pagoda complex.  It is indeed a most fantastic and awesome experience…and our excellent local guides brought its 2500 years of history to life for us, specifically noting that herein lies the main relics of Buddha.  The towering ‘stupa’ of this pagoda contains no less than 11 tons of gold plate with a massive diamond atop its conical.  It is almost beyond belief.  Being a sacred place we all walked barefoot on the marble platform.  The rest of the day was spent amid smaller but equally exquisite temples – all shrines of Buddha, as well as a visit to Myanmar’s impressive National Museum.  Our luncheon was again a “wow” experience at the renowned ‘Le Planteur’ Restaurant.

Our next day in Myanmar was a short private charter aircraft flight north to Bagan…the valley of 1000 temples.  This incredible ‘world wonder’ lies along the great Ayerwaddy River (pro. Irrewaddy).  It is in fact a temple complex covering over 60 sq. miles with more than 2,300 temples of various shapes and sizes, a most unique spectacle to see & behold.  In Bagan, we visited several of the more spectacular temples as well as a local lacqeur factory to see how this fine artform is created.  Our lunch this day was overlooking the massive Ayerwaddy River…wider than the Nile and former lifeline of Myanmar connecting ancient imperial capital Mandalay (in the north) with Bagan and down through to Yangon.

It was a dramatic and awe inspiring day for us all…and rather too soon late in the afternoon we were boarding our private charter flight back to Yangon and our plush ‘home’ at Governor’s Residence.  Here again we enjoyed a gala event for our group…taking over the second floor Mindon Lounge overlooking manicured tropical gardens, the lagoon pool, and enticing our group to a superb feast of local delicious delicacies accompanied by unique Myanmar entertainment and music.

Cultural Connections – Around the World by Luxury Private Jet – VIETNAM

OCTOBER 14 – 16 HANOI, VIETNAM

How delightful to re-board our Private Jet and be welcomed on-board by our Icelandair crew attired in beautiful silk kimonos.  Onward from Japan we jetted on to our next exotic destination, Hanoi, while enjoying a traditional Icelandic caviar and vodka celebration prior to a delicious luncheon on board our private jet.

Vietnam is a cultural collage with 53 tribes all with their own dialects and traditions.  Hanoi is frantic and fun…a bustling city of Vesper mopeds, bicycles, and pedi-cyclos.  Organized chaos.  We were happily ‘home’ amid the elegant tranquility of the “Heritage” hotel, Sofitel Metropole …built in 1901 across the old town square from the opera house.  Amid Hanoi’s ferver is an overall sense of simplicity.  Hanoi is also an elegant testament to the French colonial era of the 20th century.

The Vietnamese people are gracious and reserved, but with a great sense of humor.  While in Vietnam we enjoyed the highlights of Hanoi including the mausoleum of Ho Chi Minh, the Imperial Palace, Ho Chi Minh’s modest personal home, the National Museum, the disabled children’s store with them embroidering Vietnamese scenes and excellent lacquer work.  We took in a water puppet show and discovered the old quarter by cyclo,  an ideal way to explore the ancient quarter’s back lanes.

Choose Your Day gave all the opportunity to select their excursion.  Some chose to discover more of Hanoi, including the Museum of Ethnology, guided by renowned artisan Mark Rappaport.   Most of the group took an exciting private helicopter expedition to world heritage Halong Bay (made most famous in Catherine Deneuve’s film ‘IndoChine’) for a private luncheon cruise amongst the grottoes and limestone formations jetting out from the emerald sea.

A grand highlight of our visit to Hanoi was a sumptuous reception in the Verandah Room of our hotel.  We sampled various food delicacies of this area, while enjoying the finest French Champagnes and cocktails, as well as exceptional local musical entertainment with an assortment of Vietnamese instruments played by stunningly dressed women and men of Vietnam…a party to be long remembered by all.

Cultural Connections – Around the World by Luxury Private Jet – JAPAN

OCTOBER 9 – 13  SEATTLE – OSAKA, JAPAN

We gathered in Seattle at the luxurious and historic Fairmont Olympic Hotel to embark on this extraordinary adventure…Around the World by Luxury Private Jet connecting cultures of our world.  Our welcome gala cocktail and dinner party in the hotel’s magnificent Garden Room was a wonderful reconvening of friends and meeting of new ‘soon to be’ friends.

Being classed as a “Private Jet”, our luxuriously appointed Boeing 757 departed from private ‘Boeing Field’ – close to downtown Seattle .  For us, no hassles of that lengthy trek out to SeaTac and all the commercial hubbub. We were airborne before 11am  and on our way to Osaka, Japan with a brief refueling stop on the Russian peninsula.

During our extravagant champagne luncheon on board – with clients enjoying dining in our on board “sky lounge” – we were treated to magnificent clear views of the majestic snow capped mountain ranges of northwestern Alaska.

Following our refuel stopover we flew on to Osaka…a sumptuous dinner enroute…landing well ahead of schedule in the mid-afternoon.  We proceeded directly to our ‘home’ for three nights, the beautiful Ritz Carlton Osaka Hotel .  On arrival we were treated to an introductory “sake & sushi” celebration.

In our small, personalized groups we discovered the highlights, including the Osaka Castle, and a scenic cruise around Kobe Bay in a private salon  (while enjoying a superb Kobe beef luncheon). A highlight for many was our visit to the the Kobe Girls School where we enjoyed a tour of this impressive school as well as personal interactions with several classes.

Another unexpected highlight was touring the ‘underground city’ of Osaka and enjoying all the underworld shopping markets and stores, a surreal experience during the rush hour traffic.

Our journey to Kyoto revealed Nijo Castle, one of the Historic Monuments of Ancient Kyoto on the UNESCO World Heritage list, and Kinkaku-ji Temple of the Golden Pavilion with its traditional Japanese gardens.

Our luncheon in Kyoto at Misoguigawa was for many a ‘best of best’, being a 3-star Michelin restaurant fusion of Japanese-French cuisine. After lunch, we were private guests at the Kodaiji- Gessin-in Temple, where we participated in a Japanese tea ceremony and enjoyed a dance performance by a young geisha-in-training, known as a Maiko.

We explored Nara’s Deer Park and Temple of 1000 Lanterns before returning to Osaka.   In the evening the group enjoyed Lakani’s signature “Dine by Choice”, choosing any restaurant (anywhere in the city, not just in the hotel).
