Chobe National Park, Botswana – June 13-15, 2017 – Our private jet flight took us expeditiously from Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania across Africa to Maun, Botswana. Here we changed over to our smaller private safari planes to fly northward toward the famed Chobe National Park, to the Savute area and our luxury tented villas of Belmond’s Savute Elephant Lodge. This is the ultimate in ‘ritz carlton’ camping.
We arrived in the late afternoon and quickly set off on our first exciting safari in the rugged 4WD Landcruisers. Our Tswana Safari Guides are the best in their business and they had plenty to show us on safari. Quickly we were seeing elephants and came across a pride of lions in the late afternoon.
Like Tanzania, our days here in Savute were filled with early morning and late afternoon game drives. These are the best, cooler times of the day to see the animals active. We were so fortunate in our adventures to see several different lions, including 4 younger males moving into the area and ‘staking their claim’ with a local female lioness. Lion courtship is quite a sight and the roaring males almost made the ground shudder. One evening at dusk we were very fortunate to find a female leopard. Another morning one of our vehicles came across 2 male cheetah out in open country … they radioed to the rest of us and we were soon on the scene, enjoying an excellent rare cheetah sighting. As well, we enjoyed various elephant families some with very young energetic babies. We enjoyed seeing a variety of other species including giraffe, kudu, tsesebee, impala, warthog, wildebeest, waterbuck, ostrich, and numerous big birds such as the corey bustard, fish eagle, eagle owls, and plenty of monkeys too.
We much enjoyed our ‘home’ with Belmond at their Elephant Lodge, aptly named with elephants almost always sloshing and splashing at the waterhole in front of our pool. Our tented accommodations include massive king beds draped in mosquito netting and air conditioned (although at this time of year the in-tent heating was much more appreciated). The dawn delivery of hot chocolate, coffee, or tea to our tent was always a wonderful way to wake up. Dining with Belmond is always a delicious experience whether it be 630am breakfast (before game drive), or lazy midday lunch (before siesta), mid-afternoon tea with scones, fresh cream and jam, or candlelit dinners. One evening we enjoyed a Boma dinner ‘under the stars’ with a Southern Africa style ‘braai’ (bar-b-que) and great singing and dancing entertainment by the Botswana Belmond lodge staff. Oh, dear staff, we may never forget you.
Our continuing safaris in Botswana ensured that we could all claim to have been in Africa, on safari, and seen The Big 5. Extraordinary experiences on our Lakani Africa small group tour.
We’re on our way to the Kingdom of Morocco … and the fabled city of Marrakech at the base of the high Atlas Mountains. This journey will allow us to experience the true meaning of efficient effective private jet travel up the continent of Africa … like some of our other journeys enabling us to most comfortably and efficiently combine destinations in Africa that would usually require several commercial flights and even ‘forced overnight’ layovers. Our private jet has made these journeys virtually effortless and most easy and enjoyable. We are indeed ‘the envy of ourselves’ …
