Chobe National Park, Botswana – July 2-4, 2017 – Our private jet flight took us expeditiously from Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania across Africa to Maun, Botswana. Here we changed over to our smaller private safari planes to fly northward toward the famed Chobe National Park, to the Savute area and our luxury tented villas of Belmond’s Savute Elephant Lodge. This is the ultimate in ‘ritz carlton’ camping.
On arrival we were thrilled to hear that a family group of highly endangered Wild Dog were in the area. So, from our private charter safari aircraft with our Botswana safari Guides we all drove directly to find them. We were fortunate and found them all lazily sunning and sleeping in a grassy woodland. There were 8-10 dogs, often known as painted wolves. Soon they were getting active and we followed them for a while. This was a really exciting start to Savute for us. The dogs were found again on our final evening this time earnestly hunting and so running together to catch prey.
Our Tswana Safari Guides are the best in their business and they had plenty else to show us on safari too. Like Tanzania, our days here in Savute were filled with early morning and late afternoon game drives. These are the best, cooler times of the day to see the animals active. During our stay we enjoyed good sightings of leopard and lions, elephants at the waterhole at our camp, a large herd of cape buffalo, and more unusual such as Greater Kudu, Tsesebee, and ostrich.
We much enjoyed our ‘home’ with Belmond at their Elephant Lodge. Our tented accommodations include massive king beds draped in mosquito netting and air conditioned (although at this time of year the in-tent heating was much more appreciated). The dawn delivery of hot chocolate, coffee, or tea to our tent was always a wonderful way to wake up. Dining with Belmond is always a delicious experience whether it be 630am breakfast (before game drive), or lazy midday lunch (before siesta), mid-afternoon tea with scones, fresh cream and jam, or candlelit dinners. We celebrated 4th of July at Savute and much appreciated the camp’s highlight of this day … and we very much enjoyed our ‘under the stars’ Boma dinner around a large bonfire. We were entertained by the excellent Savute staff choir and dancers. Oh, dear staff, we may never forget you.
And on we go to the Kingdom of Morocco … and the fabled city of Marrakech at the base of the high Atlas Mountains, celebrating a 25th wedding anniversary on our way. This journey will allow us to experience the true meaning of efficient effective private jet travel up the continent of Africa … like some of our other journeys enabling us to most comfortably and efficiently combine destinations in Africa that would usually require several commercial flights and even ‘forced overnight’ layovers. Our private jet has made these journeys virtually effortless and most easy and enjoyable. We are indeed ‘the envy of ourselves’ …
